Battery life impressed, lasting for 476 hours on standby, and 340 minutes of chat

Full Review and Specification for the Sony Experia X8
The X8 is the latest introduction to Sony's Ericcson's flagship Xperia range of phone. It feels like it doesn't quite know what it is - it's larger than the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini, but more diminutive than the Xperia X10, although it's the Mini that it most looks like.

First impressions
Before we get started, we need to make it clear that the X8 is definitely aiming at the cheaper end of the market. So, first up we should not be surprised that the handset is made from somewhat flimsy plastic. However, despite feeling brittle and budget-priced, the device is also pleasingly lightweight. Our review phone came in a rather brash white, which on the one hand makes it stand out, yet on the other makes it look rather tacky.

Apart from being slightly bigger, the X8 looks pretty much like the X10 Mini, although it does have a slightly bigger display, measuring 3 inches. Its user interface is just the same as the X10 Mini's - you'll find four icons, one in each corner of the display, for dial pad, messaging, music and contacts.

It is possible to customise these to show your favourite features. Slide your finger to the left of the home screen and you'll be treated to a collection of home screens, all of which can be customised to show feeds or shortcuts. However, it is only possible to add one on each home screen - a shame because there's nearly half an inch more space on the display as there was on the X10 Mini. Slide your finger up the screen and you'll see a 12-icon menu - slide this from left to right and you'll discover even more features. This is also where you'll find any of the apps that you download from the Android Market.

When we reviewed the X10 Mini, we slated the virtual QWERTY keyboard for being too tiny for typing on. The X8, with its larger screen, makes for a larger keyboard and a more comfortable experience when keying in text messages or emails. The keyboard works better in landscape mode, as it ensures each key has a little more room. Mostly we found it accurate and even if we hit the wrong key, the auto-suggest usually came up with the right word for us.

Getting social
Timescape, Sony Ericsson's social streaming facility can also be found on board. It integrates all text messages, tweets and Facebook updates into one feed, but on the home screen you actually only see one feed. To see more, you need to enter the app. There is also a native Facebook app on the X8, but we found it rather unreliable - clicking on a posted link, it would either not acknowledge the command, or we found we had to go through extra stages to get to the link.

In fact, we were disappointed by browsing in general. There was no auto adjustment on pages so that all text could be viewed - we had to double tap to make this happen - and there's no pinch-to-zoom facility (that won't be available until the upgrade to 2.1, which is supposed to happen in January).

Setting up push email was simple, but while news of any new emails appeared on the notifications bar, we still had to refresh the inbox when we went into it to be able to read the new message. It's also not possible to set up multiple email accounts - again due to the elderly operating system. However, if one of the accounts is GoogleMail you're okay, as that has an application of its own.

The verdict
If you want an Android phone and you're on a budget, it's worth taking a look at the Sony Experia X8. But if you can afford a few extra pounds each month, shop around and you'll get a smartphone with more features.

Once the X8 has its Android 2.1 update, and some of the glitches are ironed out, it may be worth considering, but at the moment it doesn't offer anything for us to get excited about.

Sony Xperia T

Style and handling summary for Sony Xperia T
Although its rectangular design seems rather retro, the textured rubber back and flat glass front look good and the Xperia T feels sturdy to hold.
Sony Xperia T

User friendliness summary for Sony Xperia T
Android Ice Cream Sandwich offers some wonderfully streamlined apps, while Sony has added some neat touches to the interface

Feature set summary for Sony Xperia T
The 1.5Ghz dual-core processor and 1GB Ram runs HD films, games and video capture smoothly, while the 13-megapixel snapper produces clear, vibrant shots.

Performance summary for Sony Xperia T
The ‘Reality display’ has a fabulous resolution that makes games and movies look brilliant. It copes with multiple apps admirably, and the sensitive touchscreen makes finding your way around the phone simple.

Battery power summary for Sony Xperia T
You’ll see the Xperia T take you from one day to the next with moderate use

Full Review and Specification for the Sony Xperia T
Since Sony parted company with the Ericsson part of the brand that was synonymous with 90s telecoms, it has gone from strength to strength. Its Xperia phones, with their focus on music, movies and camera that have got better and better – finishing up with the slick Xperia S. But here comes the next generation in the shape of the Xperia T, with a pumped-up processor and 13-megapixel super-snapper, and running on Android Ice Cream Sandwich is the cherry on the top. So is this the next great media superphone?

Looking good

The Xperia T has a far more substantial feel than the Xperia S. It measures 129.4 x 67.3 x9.35mm and also boasts a big 4.55in display. The design has taken a diversion from the square stylings of the Xperia S, with a flat back, as well as a flat screen that sports sloping edges. And then there’s those silver buttons down the side of the handset. It also has seams, which give it, along with its heavy body, a real retro feel.

Turn over the Xperia T and you’ll see a soft rubber covering that makes the handset feel sturdy – plus there’s a shatter-proof sheet over the glass (that also is scratch resistant) so there is plenty of protection against knocks and scuffs. The chassis also curves in slightly, which offers a degree of protection to the lens of the 13-megapixel snapper.

There’s a slight bezel around the high-def ‘Reality display’ screen, so it doesn’t quite achieve that edge-to-edge ideal. However, the screen resolution is an impressive 1280x720, which is 323 pixels per inch, and which produces sharp, colourful graphics. This is assisted by the Bravia engine, which also powers Sony’s HDTVs. Comparing the screen with that on the iPhone 5, which has a 326ppi, any difference is barely perceptible to the naked eye.

Under the bonnet lurks a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1GB RAM to keep everything running smoothly. Onboard memory adds up to 16GB, which can by expanded by 32GB using the microSD slot.

Which widgets

The Xperia T wins over its predecessor when it comes to operating system – it runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich. And the user interface looks great too – icons are clear-cut and the fonts slim and sharp. A modern looks comes from the colour scheme of purple, black blue and grey – it is far less gaudy than you see on many Super AMOLED screens.

One feature that impressed us is LiveWare – switch it on if you want to link certain actions when firing up specific apps. For instance, we asked LiveWare to always fire up the music player when we plugged in headphones, and to launch the alarm clock when we plugged in the charger. It’s like the Live Actions that Motorola introduced on the RAZR, but is executed far more efficiently.

Our favourite of Sony’s custom widgets is the weather toolbar – tap on it and it folds out into a square showing more details. There are a number of social widgets too – the Friends music box for instance, displays links to music that your Facebook contacts have posted. Tap on it to listen to the tune, or to post a comment.

Timescape is also there. It has not had good reviews in the past, but now it has integrated Twitter. The idea behind it is that it works like a social aggregator, but has a system of cards that take up plenty of space but only show a little detail. This time around, Sony has left it hidden in the programs menu, instead loading the simpler Feed box onto the default home screen.

Looking to the future

The Xperia T offers support for NFC, although at the moment there are few opportunities to use it (Sony has not included the Smart Tags that came with the Xperia S). You also get Android Beam, which lets you transfer weblinks and files.

Internet connections come via HSDPA – don’t expect the speedy 4G frequency that was recently turned on by EE. Mobile data can be turned on and off using the Data Usage app found in Settings. It is also possible to set a limit on data used, and to alert the user when the limit gets close.

Sound and vision

The Xperia handsets focus on media – and the large, bright display is just made for watching movies. You can view HD films but cinematic 16:9 films will appear with black bars across both the top and bottom. It took some time to copy films onto the onboard memory – about 20 minutes to transfer a few GBs. As we have found on other handsets, it’s often quicker to put the media on a microSD card and then slot that into the phone.

Sony has harked back to the past by dubbing its music player the Walkman app. It now lets you link to your chosen Facebook posts about music, but tap on the links and you won’t be able to automatically play the music. Instead it sends you back to a site that hosts the link – plus if you switch to another app it is stopped. However, if you’re just playing your own songs, you can organise them by artist, album or track and create playlists. To control audio, use Clear Bass and Xloud, and then fine-tune using the Equaliser tab.

Even with all this media usage, browsing the net, and playing games and apps we managed to keep the battery going overnight.

Picture perfect

Sony produces some great Cybershot cameras – and the Xperia T has a 13-megapixel snapper, so we were expecting to be impressed, and we weren’t disappointed. Even just looking on the screen before taking a snap the colours are fabulous – it’s that Bravia HD graphics engine at work again. The lens was not speedy to focus, but resulting images were incredibly clear, with great colours on indoor and daylight shots. Orange, white, green and pink were particularly vivid and lifelike.

There is no macro mode on offer, but the camera managed to focus on close-up subjects without issue – and shows up amazing detail. Don’t expect it to do this on anything closer than six inches though.

With a pulsing LED flash and the Sony Exmor sensor at work, lowlight scenes came out clear and bright.

Sony Xperia T

When it comes to capturing video, results are smooth, even if you pan fast. Colours don’t come out as vivid as those on still shots, and the mic does a decent job of sound recording but it’s not very loud when played back on the phone’s speakers. Oddly, these have been placed on the back of the handset, which isn’t the perfect place if you’re watching a film, although Sony has seen fit to include a good pair of in-ear ‘phones though.

Our conclusion

Sony continues to produce fine handsets that do all the right things. The Xperia T is a well-built handset, with a slick user interface and some great styling and features. It may have a retro feel to its design, but it has a fabulous screen, great snapper and it so easy to use that there is no good reason not to choose this phone.

Sony Xperia Tipo

Feature set summary for Sony Xperia Tipo review
Getting Android Ice Cream Sandwich is a real plus at this price, plus the 3.2 megapixel snapper is fine for taking simple snaps.
Sony Xperia Tipo

Style and handling summary for Sony Xperia Tipo review
The body is a tad chunky, but it’s still neat enough to fit nicely in the hand. It feels reasonably solid but lightweight and we really like the rubberised texture on the rear.

Battery power summary for Sony Xperia Tipo review
This is a real plus point – even after 24 hours of moderate use, there was still 30% of juice remaining. Streaming video gives you a good 10 hours.

Performance summary for Sony Xperia Tipo review
The Tipo runs on a single-core chip but Android Ice Cream Sandwich runs smoothly with only the odd stutter. Most games and apps run well, but you won’t be playing the latest hardcore 3D games.

User friendliness summary for Sony Xperia Tipo review
The Xperia Tipo’s 3.2-inch screen is a little small for texting and emailing, but helped by the excellent auto-correct feature

Full Review and Specification for the Sony Xperia Tipo
Sony is churning out new Xperia phones at a rate of knots – and here’s number five for this year, the Xperia Tipo (and the Xperia SL is set to launch next week in Berlin…) So where does the Tipo fit within the range? Well, it’s certainly the cheapest, at a tad over the 100 quid mark, but still comes packed with features. There’s a 3.2-megapixel snapper AND it runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

Rubber rear

The back of the phone is covered in rubber, which makes it feel nice to hold in the hand and ensures you keep a firm grip. It is also pretty scuffproof too.

Design-wise it’s quite minimal – you’ll see a power switch, USB port and volume keys on the sides and touch-sensitive keys for Home, Back and Menu on the front. Prod the phone and these will light up. It’s a neat design, even if a tad chunky.

In fact that chunky feel reminded us of the old Sony Walkman handsets. Yet it’s still light – coming in on the scales at a little under 100g. It still feels pretty solid, though, as if it would stand up to a few knocks and bumps.

Sweet system

At this price, you’d be forgiven for expecting the Tipo to run on Android’s older Gingerbread operating system – but you’d be wrong. Under the hood lurks Ice Cream Sandwich, which has a few tweaks to make an improvement on ICS, as well as a nice choice of resizable widgets. These can be dropped onto your desktop, and you can also easily set up folders by simply dragging your chosen apps together.

The processor is of the single-core variety but manages to run the OS well, apart from the odd stutter when finding your way through the menus or switching between desktops – we suspect that’s also why there’s a non-animated background on the Tipo. We also had an issue with some of the widgets (including the bookmark tabs and inbox viewer) freezing. We had no problems running the likes of Angry Birds in Space, but don’t expect to be able to play any of the latest intensive 3D games.

The interface has had the Sony touch and looks like your average Xperia smartphone – witness the Timescape widgets and electric background. There’s a notifications bar to offer speedy access to the settings menu and above the display sits an LED for alerting you when an app update or new message comes in. It’s nice to see a dearth of bloatware apps, but Sony has thought to include a copy of Office Suite.

Snap to basics

The snapper is a 3.2 megapixel model. It’s basic – and there’s no flash – but it does have features such as geo-tagging and a timer. The on-screen shutter key takes images almost straight away because there is no focus. Pictures come out rather soft if viewed on a monitor. Blur and glare were an issue and our night and evening pictures were just too dark. However, it’s okay for taking pictures for Facebook.

Small screen

The display is small at 3.2 inches, which can be an issue for typing emails and texts. It’s easier if you hold the handset sideways, which gives you a bit more space on the keyboard. The auto-correct was excellent though – and we found we could type pretty speedily once we’d got used to the small screen.

The small screen is also an issue when playing games, using apps and watching video, but is still usable. Images look sharp, even though the display isn’t that vibrant or bright. The touchscreen proved responsive enough, although sometimes we found we had to tap onscreen keys and options more than once to get a result. The display also feels a tad flimsy – it gives when prodded and the image gets distorted.

We were impressed, however, by the Tipo’s battery life. We used it all day for going online, texting, emailing, using apps and maps, as well as making a call and watching some video and we still had about 30% of our power left. A full 10 hours of video watching is possible before the battery dies – really impressive.

Our conclusion

The Sony Xperia Tipo is good value at a tad over 100 quid – it’s one of the cheapest phones to run on Ice Cream Sandwich too. The performance is good, especially considering the processor, and the camera is basic but produces decent-enough Facebook shots.

Sony Xperia Go

Feature set summary for Sony Xperia Go review
The five-megapixel snapper grabs 720p video and produces clear daytime images, plus for Skype calls there’s a front-facing camera. The Android Gingerbread OS is a bit dated, so let’s hope it gets an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade soon.
Sony Xperia Go

Style and handling summary for Sony Xperia Go review
The Xperia Go’s chassis is well made, so it should survive the odd drop or knock, plus it’s neat enough to slip into a pocket.

Battery power summary for Sony Xperia Go review
Even when playing games and apps and watching movies we got a good day out of a full battery. Light use will see the battery last a couple of days.

Performance summary for Sony Xperia Go review
Under the hood is a dual-core chip that future-proofs the handset and is powerful enough for any game or app

User friendliness summary for Sony Xperia Go review
The screen is a tad small, and the OS could do with an update. Plus the touchscreen could be more responsive and we lost our signal every so often

Full Review and Specification for the Sony Xperia Go
Mobile phones have to endure quite a lot of abuse, so it’s surprising how many fail to be sturdy enough to survive being dropped on the pavement – or down the toilet. Can the Sony Xperia Go stand up to a bit more punishment than your average handset?

Ready to Go

The Go is quite neat – the only thing adding to its length is the lip that sits under its display – just like the Sony Xperia U. It’s slim, though, coming in at just under 10mm, so it can easily be slipped into any pocket. It’s lightweight too, but manages not to feel plasticky. On the reverse you’ll find a textured coating, that stops the Go sliding across the table if it gets nudged.

Button-wise, you’ll find the volume buttons on the right edge and the power button on the top of the handset.

So, to get to that sturdiness – first off, the 3.5in display fends off scratches. We tried going at it with paper clips, pens, the corners of the desk – anything we could think of, and it survived with not a mark.

The ports are covered with rubber tips, which are designed to keep out dust and water – as long as they are sealed properly, the handset should be able to survive a dunking in the water (should you drop it in that toilet bowl, for instance).

you send a lot of emails and texts, we’d suggest you try out the Xperia Go in the store before splashing out on one, as the small display won’t be to everyone’s taste. We managed to mistype quite a lot of words when typing on the onscreen keyboard in portrait mode. It works far better in landscape mode, where you get bigger buttons and more room to work with. If you do make a mistake, tap on the offending word and a list of possible replacements will pop up.

The Xperia Go runs on Android Gingerbread, which is a tad outdated, so we hope it gets updated to Ice Cream Sandwich sometime soon. Call quality is okay, but we did experience some signal loss on occasion when we were making calls. Plus the data connection seemed to drop out more than we would expect. GPS suffered from the same issue and it often found it hard to lock onto our location.

Get online

Web pages were quick to load using the Android browser, when we were able to get a good connection. The phone kept up when we whizzed through a site quickly, and we were able to zoom in and out without experiencing the distortion often seen on Android handsets. It is also possible to stream video from sites such as BBC News and 4OD. However, it’s a shame that the display wasn’t as responsive as we would have liked – sometimes we found ourselves pushing the screen hard, which felt like we were using the older resistive type of screen.

For social networking there’s a Facebook app onboard (although no Twitter app), or you can choose to use Sony’s own Timescape widget. It hasn’t been updated since its last outing – the sync can take some time and it still has to be manually updated. Personally we’d rather stick with the Twitter and Facebook apps

Entertainment

The screen may only measure 3.5 inches, and be somewhat unresponsive, but it’s clear enough for watching TV programmes should you wish – and is bright enough to avoid annoying reflections. Oddly, look really closely and you’ll see a grid of dots sitting in the background – a sign of the budget nature of the display.

The Go sports a five-megapixel snapper, which impresses with its sharp images, and has pre-set scenes, the option to adjust the ISO, and a 3D panoramic mode. It is also capable of shooting 720p video. The shutter suffers from some lag, which is not helpful when taking action shots, and low-light pictures are grainy. There is a built in flash though, and there’s a front-facing camera should you wish to Skype your friends.

Apps-wise there are fitness apps, such as Adidas miCoach (your own personal trainer, featuring sports stars such as Andy Murray and Jessica Ennis) and WalkMate, which measures how far you walk. The phone’s tough chassis makes it suitable for taking it down the gym.

Battery life is impressive – on standby you’ll get days of use out of it. Emailers and texters should still see a good two days out of a full battery. Even if you’re a big game player you should get a day of play before you need to recharge. The dual-core chip ensures that you’ll be able to play all the games you want.

Our conclusion

The Sony Xperia Go is a sturdy mid-range Android handset that can stand up to everyday life well, and will suit those who do a lot of travelling, thanks to the combination of excellent battery life and sturdy construction, However, there are some concerns – the signal issues for a start, plus the old operating system and the small, unresponsive display.
